Set up Softkeys and your default launcher

There seems to be some confusion on how to set up Softkeys and your default launcher in order to have access to the Softkeys menu and set your default launcher. The use cases and how it's configured are below. Some folks will want things configured different ways, but the following set up works well for me.

Usage cases

  • To launch the primary launcher, hit the physical N button once
  • To launch the Softkeys popup at the bottom of the screen (which contains the Back/Menu/Search etc buttons), hit the physical N button twice
  • To launch the secondary launcher, hit the physical N button twice to get the Softkeys pop, then tap and hold the Home button in the overlay

How to configure Softkeys

  1. Launch the Softkeys app to get into the Softkeys preferences
  2. Disable the Softkeys Service option (if you do not want the hovering Arrow button)
  3. Set the following in the Virtual Home Button section
    • Launcher for normal press: The launcher you want to see when you hit the physical N button
    • Launcher for Long press: The launcher you want to optionally launch when you tap and hold the soft Home button from the Softkeys popup
  4. Set the following in the Physical Home Button section
    • Home Button: Single Tap Launcher, Double Tap Softkeys
  5. Install Home Switcher from the Market and set your default launcher to Softkeys

Remember that when a launcher updates, it'll clear the default settings. Always pick Softkeys as your default launcher! If you want to change which launcher you use, do it in the Softkeys preferences.
