Barnes & Noble nookColor is an e-reader/tablet hybrid developed by Barnes & Noble, based on the Android platform. The device was announced in the United States on October 26, 2010, and was released on November 19, 2010 for US$249. The nookColor will compete with the Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, and other tablets, and includes Wi-Fi connectivity, and a seven inch LCD Capacitive Touch Screen display that serves as the primary input device.
Features
The nookColor is based on the Android (operating system) (which was initially developed by Android, Inc and purchased by Google in 2005), and has a MicroSD expansion slot for extra storage. One differentiating feature of the nook is the "LendMe" feature: some books are licensed by their publishers for sharing. In those cases, the purchaser is permitted to share a book once, with one other user, for up to two weeks. Users will be able to share purchased books with others who are using Barnes & Noble's reader application software for Blackberry, iPhone, iPod Touch, Mac, and Windows, and also other nook users with the "LendMe" app.
The nookColor also has the potential for user install android apps. B&N claims that the full app store will be up and running in the early part of 2011.
