Unroot / Perform Factory Reset

Sometimes, if you've been experimenting, and you didn't make sufficient backups, or you've layered on too many changes and lost your place, it's necessary to start over. This is how.

Note: The following UN ROOTS your nook color. It does not un-install all your modifications and apps. If you want to return your nook color to the out-of-the-box condition, follow the instructions at Flash back to clean stock ROM.

This procedure un-roots your nook color. It does not restore your nook to factory fresh. Your books and apps are left on the device. There are two methods to achieve this.

Method 1: Hardware Key Combination

Note: It's been stated that this procedure can be done while the NOOKcolor is powered on or powered off. These instructions follow the powered off method.
  1. With the NOOKcolor powered off hold down the n button (home) and Power Button until the NOOKcolor powers on.
  2. You will be prompted with a Factory Reset dialog.
    Press POWER key to Exit
    Press HOME key to continue
  3. Press n button (home).
  4. You will be prompted to confirm.
    Press POWER key to Exit
    Press HOME key to continue
  5. Press n button (home).
  6. A Clearing Data dialog will show. NOOKcolor will reboot automatically once complete.

Method 2: "Erase & Deregister Device"

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select "Device Info" under the top "Device Settings" section
  3. Select "Erase & Deregister Device"
  4. Select the "Erase & Deregister Device" button
  5. You will be prompted with the following confirmation dialog
Are you sure you want to reset your Nook?
Doing so will return your Nook to factory settings, erase local content and deregister this device.
    Cancel Reset Nook
  6. Select the "Reset Nook" button
  7. A Deregistration message will appear and NOOKcolor will reboot.
  8. Upon reset a Clearing data message will appear
    Clearing data...
    A reset is being performed.
This may take a few minutes.
  9. NOOKcolor will reboot again once complete.
