Barnes & Noble nook is an electronic book reader developed by Barnes & Noble, based on the Android platform. The device was announced in the United States on October 20, 2009, and was released on November 30, 2009 for US$259. The nook competes with the Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader, and other readers, and includes Wi-Fi and AT&T 3G wireless connectivity, a six inch E Ink display, and a separate, smaller color touchscreen that serves as the primary input device.
Features
The nook is the first electronic book reader to be based on the Android (operating system) (which was initially developed by Google), and has a MicroSD expansion slot for extra storage. One differentiating feature of the nook is the "LendMe" feature: some books are licensed by their publishers for sharing. In those cases, the purchaser is permitted to share a book once, with one other user, for up to two weeks. Users will be able to share purchased books with others who are using Barnes & Noble's reader application software for Blackberry, iPhone, iPod Touch, Mac, and Windows, and also other nook users.
Availability
The nook was made available for pre-order in the United States for US$259 following its launch on October 20, 2009 and began shipping on November 30th, 2009. The device was made available on November 30th, 2009 for demonstrations in Barnes & Noble stores. Due to the large amount of original pre-orders, multiple ship dates are in effect depending on when customers ordered nook. The first shipment arrived as planned on November 30th, the second shipment arrived on December 7th, the third shipment on December 18th, the fourth shipment arrived on January 4th, the fifth shipment arrived on January 15th, the sixth shipment date is February 1st, and the latest date is February 12th. The multiple ship dates are the result of a larger than expected demand for nook and the impossibility to fill all the orders by November 30th. As time progresses, the devices are shipping earlier than their expected dates (many Feb. 1st orders were received in the last two weeks of January).
