Update to Android 2.2 Market

Autonoot will provide access to the Android Market as one of the many tasks it automatically handles for you. The standard market app has a drawback - It only fetches multiple screenfuls of search results when the screen actually fills up. In portrait orientation, the screen of the Nook Color is larger than a single page of search results. This prevents the market from fetching search results beyond the first page.

The work-around is to turn the Nook Color to landscape orientation in order to signal the market to go into "paging mode" and continue fetching search results after the first page fills up.

A new interface was released for the official market towards the end of third quarter of 2010. The new app had an improved search and user interface. This new market app also had the advantage that it is able to fill the screen in portrait mode on the Nook Color, and is able to fetch further pages of results in portrait mode.

Update Procedure

Updating to the newest market app is simply a matter of downloading the APK file and installing it. This works even on devices like the Nook Color which run a version older than Android 2.2.

If you use the stock Nook Color web browser then the APK file will be saved into your browser download list.

Once saved, tap the file. If you have not designated a default package installer, then you will be prompted for which app to use. Tap on the system installer to activate it.

Whether you were prompted in the previous step or not, you will now be prompted to confirm that you want to replace a system app. Confirm that you really do want to replace a system app.

The installation will proceed with no further interaction required. When it's finished, your market will be updated to the new 2.2 style of market.

In addition to the other benefits listed, the touch sensitivity on the search icon appears to be much improved, making it easier to initiate a search.
