Some of the community standalone Linux boot images use RNDIS over usb to emulate an ethernet connection to the NookColor. This lets you use ssh to log into the running Linux.
Windows XP through Windows 7 should support this out of the box as this is the same standard Windows Mobile 6.5 uses to communicate. However, Windows 7 x64 needs an additional driver:
- On Win7 x64:
- Download Windows Mobile Device Center driver here
- Run the installer
- Update the driver for the still-not-installed RNDIS device
- Go to Control Panel->Hardware->Device Manager
- Find the "RNDIS/Ethernet Gadget" device with the yellow warning sign to the left and double click it
- In the "Driver" tab, choose "Update Driver"
- Choose "Browse My Computer"
- Choose "Let me pick"
- Choose "Network Adapters"
- In the list, choose manufacturer "Microsoft Corporation" and Network Adapter "Remote NDIS Compatible Device"
- Click through the driver warning
- The device will disappear from the Other devices list
Recent Linux distributions should not need any drivers.
(anyone want to comment on OSX?)
