From nookDevs
I installed the first of the two application zip files on a newly rooted "new hardware" nook. It generally worked great. Thanks Nomad.

Anybody wanna buy a brick? -- It lives!
Any clues welcome. Goodnight all.
--Randomizer 00:40, 25 October 2010 (PDT)
- Actually, there is no way to completely brick the device with those packages, unlike with failed firmware update. You can easily restore your nook simply by reseting it to factory firmware (1.4.1 in your case) using a trick with holding power button for 12+ seconds about 6 times (can't find a description at the moment, but it was here). I'll re-test the packages to fix wifi_stop.sh issue and hangs with second one. Thank's for finding it out. --Nomad 04:09, 25 October 2010 (PDT)

- That's a relief. I suspect it may just be a drained battery. I had it plugged in but with wifi pinned on it can drain, I bet. --Randomizer 04:27, 25 October 2010 (PDT)

- Yay! unbricked with a little effort (charged and then 6*12 second power button press on reboot started the firmware fallback and re-rooted. I think I'll stick with the first package for now despite that I think I had a nook problem not a script problem, thanks nomad! --Randomizer 10:33, 25 October 2010 (PDT)

Trying to Load Bravo_update.dat After Root
I have rooted my nook, thanks to the detailed instructions for the new hardware. I now want to load the updated firmware. I put a bravo_update.dat on my external microSD, followed the instructions of holding the top page button on the right, powering it up, continuing to hold the top page button and I still get the "starting up" screen. It never goes to the update. I have tried various combinations, timings, but still nothing. I am currently on the B&N firmware 1.4.1 (now rooted) with sernum 10032... Any ideas? Thanks.
- Load the update to your device (i.e. to external card), log in with adb shell and run command cat /sdcard/bravo_update.dat > /system/update/bravo_update.dat . Then you'll be able to install it holding right '<' button during powerup. P.S. not sure is 1.4.0-based are safe to install in this way. And I know only one adb-enabled update based on 1.4.1: runserver.net/nook/bravo_update_1.4.1.7z --Nomad 12:25, 27 October 2010 (PDT)
Thanks Nomad. Are you saying loading the bravo_update.dat may brick the nook, since it is already at 1.4.1? Also, instead of using the bravo_update.dat linked to in the rooting document (2.4.1??), should I instead use the 1.4.1.7z you referenced? --Crandallbk 16:56, 27 October 2010 (PDT)
-
- It potentially can - 1.4.1 have some kernel modules and boot data changed. 1.4.1.7z I referenced is an archive containing bravo_update.dat, created from factory 1.4.1 firmware with ADB unlocked. I'm pretty sure it would flash normally, but I do not have 1.4.1 device to test, so that is only assumption. --Nomad 23:35, 27 October 2010 (PDT)

Maybe newbie user have difficulties to make the root, here a tutorial I followed to root my Nook. tutorial with pictures
How to upgrade to 1.5 version?
I have one device with new hardware (1003...), with 1.4.3 version. I follow this guide and root my Nook. But now, how I can upgrade my device to new 1.5 version?
Can I download this: http://andblogs.net/2010/11/nook-1-5-with-root-and-adb/ and what's?
Thanks!
- Well, I updated my nook with this steps http://blog.filipivc.com/2011/01/08/how-to-upgrade-nook-1-4-to-1-5-with-root/ based on a page from this site --Dark steybow 03:51, 10 January 2011 (PST)
Possible issue with Nomad's packages
I think I found a minor issue in Nomad's "nomad_package.zip" package that is affecting battery life. In /init.rc the line disabling adb is commented out:
service adbd /sbin/adbd
# disabled
(Note the # in front of the "disabled" line turning that line into a comment)
As a result after I installed nomad_package.zip adb was always running and wifi_locker would lock up and force close if I tried to disable adb. I pulled init.rc and removed the comment from that line then pushed it back to the nook - then after rebooting I confirmed adb was no longer running by default and wifi_locker was able to turn adb on and off correctly.
Step by step:
1) adb connect NOOK_IP:5555
2) adb pull init.rc
3) Edit init.rc removing the "#" on line 305 so the section looks like:
service adbd /sbin/adbd
disabled
4) adb push init.rc /init.rc
5) reboot nook
Going to have to wait a day or two to see if this does help with battery life. I checked the files in nomad_package.zip and confirmed that the version of init.rc it installs is where that comment came from.
Now if I can just figure out why I have to re-register my nook every time I reboot it...my wife's non-rooted nook doesn't seem to do that.

Is the fake update server 217.20.163.111 still alive?
I'm trying to root my nook with SN 10046*.
I think I have successfully redirect "sync.barnesandnoble.com && edmfiletransfer.barnesandnoble.com" to 210.20.163.111. But my nook can not get any update.
I tried to ping "sync.barnesandnoble.com" with another computer under the same router. The parsed IP address is 210.20.163.111, and I got "request time out". Is the fake update server down? can not it be pinged? Or, my network can not connect to the server?
What do you get, when you try to ping 210.20.163.111?
I find Oktaya points out that the nook should be registered before getting the update from fake server. But you can't register your nook with the fake update server, right? And, when you are registering your nook with official server, will your nook be updated to 1.5, automatically? This is what confusing me. Could any one give me more detail info?
Thanks for any help!!!!
My problem has been solved. I need to register my nook, first. And then my nook could connect to the fake server.
20110408 - redirecting sync and edmfiletransfer to 210.20.163.111 doesn't seem to work. When I type the URL in my browser, I'm taken to a Russian site for online WoW and other MMORPG playing. Is the server working for anyone else? Is it possible to get the hacked firmware anywhere else? I'm not averse to setting up my own server, but I need the firmware and some instructions to start with... --W33ble 18:07, 8 April 2011 (PDT)
- NM, figured it out. You have to register your device BEFORE you enable the DNS trickery. Regardless of the message saying registration worked, it really did not unless you do it before the hacks. Sorry about that. --W33ble 18:07, 8 April 2011 (PDT)
