How do I get into an adb shell? I type it on the terminal emulator and get "adb: permission denied"

You don't type it on the terminal emulator. After you install the Android Debug Bridge (adb) on your computer -- see https://nookdevs.com/NookColor_USB_ADB -- you can open a command window (on PCs, Run -> cmd) and get in that way. I had some trouble with the drivers when connecting the NC directly to the PC, so I've been connecting via wifi (https://nookdevs.com/NookColor:adb_wireless). It seems to be working pretty well.
