Might wanna add a note about adb via wifi being disabled by default. - JairunCaloth

I dont think adb over wifi is possible now? (adbd is binarly different in version 2.4.0 and 2.4.1 for some reason). the fact that it's disabled by default is mentioned ADB Over USB article. I agree that it should also be mentioned here. I also don't like the mynook.ru launcher - i do like the b&n 1.4 icons best, much better than mynook.ru. I also don't like the fact that mynook.ru launcher replaces icons in b&n home. b&n home dynamically changes icons when it's in store, I dont believe either nookLauncher or mynook.ru launcher do that when nook is in b&n store (I mainly mean the shop icon with "instore" banner when at b&n - b&n developers may add more dynamic icons in future possibly). Also what's the point of releasing new nookLauncher by the nookdevs team if nookdevs team dumps the nookLauncher and replaces it with mynook.ru Launcher? Does it mean nookLauncher is coming back in next version? also it would be great if nookLauncher spreaded icons exacly like b&n home launcher does - right now they're wider in nookLauncher. Also the new icons look weird when in add/remove icons mode in nookLauncher and the captions are cut off. The best solution in my mind would be to dump both launchers and patching the b&n launcher to be able to add nookdevs icons and apps to it. I also see a lot of scripts in /system/bin added and a lot removed comparing softroot 2.4.0 and 2.4.1, so I wonder what does it mean? Is softroot 2.4.0 a prerequisite for 2.4.1? I rolled back to 2.4.0 for now - mainly because of adb over wifi, the mynook.ru icons which I dont like and the fact that mynook.ru launcher messes icons in b&n home. I agree walking around with adb over wifi permanently switched on is not a good idea but i thought that's what wifilocker with stopping adb is for. Now I'm confused: does wifilocker stop adb over usb? or adb over wifi? or both? when I stop it does wifilocker actually verifies that adb is stopped? --Spec 09:24, 31 July 2010 (PDT)
Lots of concerns here, well ADB over wifi is possible but it's not recommended as it can be a security issue on public hotspots. You can re-enable it with the instructions in the README file on that page. I would have loved to have included nooklauncher over the mynook launcher, however the nooklauncher has had an issue present in it for many versions that does not allow me to do in-place upgrades with the softroot/ROM which I have told the authors about several times. I cannot release a softroot/ROM which cannot be upgraded without messing up all the icons. The mynook launcher also takes care of several issues with the "back" buttons of apps going back to the official B&N launcher. Also when ADB is stopped via wifilocker it should be adbd, and adbd covers both wifi and USB. As far as icons go, they are configurable, and perhaps we can come to some sort of compromise by having icon set. The "Stop ADB" was a leftover artifact from when we had ADB over wifi by default so people could turn it off if they'd be using a public hotspot.

bins (or symlinks) that exists in 2.4.0 that were removed in 2.4.1 in /system/bin are: nohup, nslookup, sed, sha1sum, sort, tail, tar, test, touch, tr, traceroute, uniq, vi, wc, wget, which, who, whoami, xargs, zcat - I wonder if all of this is intentional? --Spec 09:31, 31 July 2010 (PDT)

2.4.1 was modified from stock 1.4.0, not 2.4.0 explaining these missing symlinks, I will have them in the next softroot -- User:Poutine:Poutine
Poutine thanks for the response. So perhaps we could see 2.4.2 sometime soon? it would be great to see a 1 click solution to turning on adb over wifi, with that functionality being off by default. as far as nookLauncher messing up the icons, back button etc none of that (in my subjective opinion) is as annoying as permanently modifying original b&n launcher. I would have to test it, but I'm pretty sure that the fact the b&n menu dynamically adjust itself upon detecting b&n hotspot is broken by mynook.ru launcher, that's not too mention the icons . And to go back to adb over wifi feature, I believe (perhaps foolishly) that rechargeable batteries still are affected by this problem. So each time i need to use adb, if i do that over usb, the nook is partially recharged, which I believe shortens its battery life - which is why i prefer to connect to it via wifi... --Spec 19:59, 31 July 2010 (PDT)
Just wanting to chime in: I, too, much prefer having an untouched B&N launcher available over having it replaced by another one. With the v2.4.1 softroout, would replacing "Home.apk" with that from the official firmware and installing nookLauncher restore the status quo of the previous softroot with respect to launchers? --Curio 01:12, 1 August 2010 (PDT)
I would say you should try it. In my opinion replacing Home.apk with the original b&n one will block you from using mynook.ru launcher altogether - you will have no way to get to it, as it looks to be invoked from Home.apk only. It's not like nookLauncher which seems to catch the nook button press event. I would just backup current Home.apk and replace it with original and see what happens. if you dont like it you can go back to backed up Home.apk. I'd be curious to hear about your findings. BTW what's your reason to preferring original b&n launcher? --Spec 09:51, 1 August 2010 (PDT)

one other thing i noticed is the file classes.dex is left in /system/framework - I dont believe it needs to be there once it's packed back into services.jar --Spec 09:35, 31 July 2010 (PDT)

This was a mistake, the classes.dex was properly repackaged up, however I left that file there, it will be removed in the next softroot/rom -- Poutine

what's the version of mynook.ru launcher that's included? do i need to upgrade to 1.5 that's on their website? --Spec 12:06, 30 July 2010 (PDT)

Does mynook.ru Launcher really allows "3rd party applications to be installed" as it says here: Softroot#What.27s_in_the_Softroot ? --Spec 09:58, 31 July 2010 (PDT)

It allows them to be ran more so than installed, with the stock launcher you can't run anything.

I'm looking for information regarding backing up user data before I upgrade to the latest nookdevs. Is there an easy way to do this? Is it necessary beyond just backing up what data I have on my external SD? Thanks --TheCowboy

Maybe it should be obvious to anyone about to attempt softrooting, but perhaps there should be a Step 0: Back up anything on your Nook that you would like to keep! Also, the instructions don't say anything about registering/unregistering the Nook from B&N before rooting. I did it successfully without un-registering, but if one option is preferable, it ought to be addressed.--AnjeTheNerd 11:28, 14 October 2010 (PDT)

Checksums for 1.0.0 downgrade

Hi - Just wondering why the MD5 and other checksums for the 1.0.0 downgrade were taken off the intructions page. There's still checksums for the update. A faulty downgrade could brick your nook, so checking the downgrade is as necessary as checking the update...

Hi. I'm sucessfully rooted my nook with serial starting with 1002. The md5 signature for 1.0.0 bravo is c752fa57f7253d4c499398630c27bdab

But, if you get a corrupted download, like I'd get, your nook will not update to 1.0.0 version, displaying the "Invalid Update" message in e-ink display.

Restoring to stock

Instead of performing steps 1 to 3, do this:

1) Turn off the nook.

2) Press and let go the power button.

3) The second it flashes a black screen, hold down the power button for 12 seconds.

4) Perform Step 2-3 an additional 5 times(total 6)

5) Then restart normally. The nook will then start the standard software update procedure, restoring the stock firmware.

Just tried it, and it works.

Thank you for the manual rest instructions.

After the 2.4.1 update, I was getting the "Black Screen of Launcher fail".
Add in the unsuccessful ADB login and unresponsive drives, it pretty much bricked the nook.
Does any know which upgrade version works with:
          SN: 100307...
      initVN: 1.4.0

Thanks again. John

Instructions for installing custom Roms with New Hardware (1.4.1 firmware).

Once the nook is rooted, are the instructions otherwise the same? Does the new hardware have the same locations for storing the new ROM?

Points to aid in clarity

  1. Could you mention the files are to be copied over with the names they download with -

i.e. - signed_bravo_update.dat & bravo_update.dat

I kept wondering, if the names had to be changes to something else.

  1. Also, this should help explain the fact as to why they both are named similarly -

signed_bravo_update.dat/bravo_update.dat

as I was wondering if they both were the same ROM, signed/unsigned.

Why page locked?

I want to update the softroot page to include links for 2.5.1 and some mirros too, but the page has been locked for some reason. Can someone with the proper permissions unlock the page or update it?
