Import/Export Method
In order to get your contacts to show up in Gmail, Google Voice, K9, etc follow these instructions:
- Navigate to (doing this on a desktop is easiest).
- Select the contacts you would like to have on your NookColor
- Choose 'Export' then export these contacts to vcard (vcf) format.
- Place this file on the root of your microSD card
- Download 'Import Contacts' by edam from the market.
- Use this to import your contacts and you're good to go!
Now, when you begin typing someone's name, their email or phone number, etc will show up in the programs mentioned above.
Enjoy!
Note 1: Contacts with multi-line notes in Gmail will error out as a "formatting error" when importing the contacts. To avoid this, open the vcf file in notepad and delete all notes that span multiple lines.
Note 2: Contacts with phone numbers with custom labels won't show up in Google Voice (i.e. if you type "Fring Number" for the label, etc.)
Note 3: Instead of deleting notes that span multiple lines, use an editor that allows search and replace of special characters. The "formatting error" is caused by instances of a carriage return followed by a space on the next line. You can use Word for this -- Find what: "^p " (that's ^p followed by a space - don't include the quotes) Replace with: (leave it blank). Hopefully we'll have a import program that handles all of the fields and this technique will be more useful.
Touchdown Exchange Method
Another method, albeit an expensive one, is to install the Touchdown for Android application, which is an Exchange client. It's free for 30 days, but pretty expensive to purchase after the trial period.
Set it up as follows..
- Username and/or Email all
- Domain leave blank
- Password use your Google password
- Server: m.google.com
- SSL and other options you can leave their defaults
When it finishes syncing, you should have your contacts. Unfortunately you can't do this and then uninstall, as it apparently also removes the contacts on the device it synced in, but if you already own Touchdown this is another method to get contacts into the device.
Your mileage may vary: This method will work to get your contacts on the NookColor, however Touchdown does not store its contacts in the general Android contact database which is why they are erased when the application is uninstalled. Also, I have found that Touchdown does not reliably see the license information on the NookColor even if you do own a copy.
